GPA Converters

These convert between the ways grades get reported. Percentage to letter grade, letter grade to grade points, SGPA to CGPA, a weighted average to a plain one. They exist because the same underlying performance gets described differently depending on who is asking, and you usually cannot give them a raw mark.

Conversion is arithmetic once you know the scale being used, and the hard part is always knowing which scale. The two country-specific tools here are for the systems that genuinely need them, because CBSE and the South African points-based matriculation do not reduce to a percentage cleanly.

  • Percentage to GPA Converter — Percentage to GPA converter on the US 4.0 scale: convert a percentage to a letter grade and GPA points, or a letter grade back to its percentage band.
  • GPA to Percentage Converter — GPA to percentage converter: enter your GPA on a 4.0, 5.0, 10, or 7-point scale and get the approximate percentage equivalent.
  • Letter Grade to GPA — Letter grade to GPA converter: see how many GPA points a letter grade is worth on US 4.0, Canada 4.3, India 10-point, Australia 7-point, and Nigeria 5-point scales.
  • GPA to Letter Grade — GPA to letter grade converter: enter your GPA on any scale and see which letter grade it reads as closest to.
  • CGPA to Percentage Calculator — CGPA to percentage calculator, and percentage to CGPA the other way: pick the formula your university actually uses (CBSE x9.5, x10, (CGPA – 0.75) x10, (CGPA – 0.5) x10, or Mumbai 7.1x…
  • SGPA to CGPA Calculator — SGPA to CGPA calculator: add each semester SGPA with its credits and get the credit-weighted CGPA your transcript prints, the simple average beside it, the exact gap between the two,…
  • Credit Hour Calculator — Credit hour calculator: total earned, in-progress, and planned course credits, then compare the result with your degree target and see what remains.
  • Quiz Average Calculator — Quiz average calculator that pools the points from every quiz for one fair average.
  • Exam Average Calculator — Exam average calculator for midterms and finals.
  • Semester Average Calculator — Semester average calculator: calculate a credit-weighted or simple average from your course percentages, with the formula and a rough letter grade shown.

The scales you will meet

The 4.0 scale is the North American default, where an A is a flat 4.0 and the minus steps cost 0.1 each. It is the least precise scale in common use: a 95 and a 70 can both be a 3.0 on some scales, so a 4.0 GPA is genuinely less information than the same record expressed as a percentage.

The 5.0, 7-point and 10-point systems exist because those countries weight differently, and a “GPA” in Australia or India is not comparable to a 4.0 without knowing which one. If you are submitting to a school in another country, ask them which scale they read before converting.

When a conversion is not possible

Some systems carry information a percentage cannot. A distinction or an award in the Irish system is a qualitative judgement, not a number, and mapping it onto a 4.0 invents a precision that was never in the original.

Matriculation results in South Africa are points-based with subject weights, so a single average across subjects is misleading unless the weights are respected. The tools here either do the weighted version properly or say clearly that a single number is not the right output.

Rounding and the difference it makes

Most conversions are only defined at a certain precision, and rounding in the middle of a chain of conversions compounds the error. Convert from raw to letter in one step rather than converting percentage to grade points and then grade points to a letter.

If a threshold is close, check what happens at the boundary. A requirement written as 3.5 and a value that comes out at 3.4997 rounds to 3.5 on a transcript but is not the same number, and institutions differ on which one they test.

Frequently asked questions

Is a percentage better than a GPA?

It is more precise, and precision is only useful if the person receiving it can use it. For a school that reads 4.0, a percentage is meaningless without a conversion policy. For an employer or a graduate program that reads percentages, a 4.0 is meaningless. Match the format to the reader.

Why do the conversions disagree with the school website?

Usually a scale difference, occasionally a rounding difference, and sometimes the school has a bespoke policy for a specific programme. If you need the number for an application, use the school’s own published table over any converter, including these.

Can I convert an Indian CGPA to a percentage?

Only using the rule your board applies, and the common CBSE rule is percentage equals CGPA times 9.5, which many boards also use as a divisor rather than a multiplier. That single difference produces a ten-point gap, so check which one your own school uses.

When a form asks for a conversion and does not say which scale, the safest answer is to ask them. A two-line email costs less than a rejected application over a decimal point.
