Term Progress

The Term Progress bar shows how far through the semester you are, how many days are left, and where midterms, finals and a break sit along the way. Enter a start date and an end date, add any key dates you know, and you get a filled bar, a percentage, a day count and a short list of milestones.

It is for the stretch in the middle of term where the end feels miles off and the first midterm sneaks up. One number you can look at instead of doing date arithmetic in your head at 1am.

Six dates are available: term start, term end, midterms, finals, and a break window. The ones you leave empty are simply left off the bar, so you can run it with just a start and an end if that is all you have.

See your semester progress at a glance. Enter key dates to get a visual progress bar with milestones marked.

How the bar is worked out

Everything comes from two timestamps and today’s clock. The term length is the end date minus the start date, rounded up to whole days, and the percentage complete is the time elapsed since the start divided by that length, capped between 0 and 100. Days remaining is the time from now until the end, rounded up and never allowed to go below zero.

Each milestone you fill in gets its own percentage, worked out the same way from the start date, and the markers land on the bar at those positions. Midterms and finals each need one date. The break marker needs both a break start and a break end, but only the start is plotted, so the second field is really a switch that turns the marker on.

The milestones are sorted before they are listed, so Key Dates reads in order across the term rather than in the order you typed them, and the markers are clamped to the bar so nothing is drawn off the edge.

A real term with real numbers

Take a term running 1 September 2026 to 18 December 2026, with midterms on 15 October, a break starting 6 November and finals on 14 December. Run it on the morning of 29 September and the term length reads 108 days, with 80 days remaining and 25.9% complete, because 28 of those 108 days have gone.

The Key Dates list comes back sorted: Midterms at 40.7% through term, Break starts at 61.1%, Finals at 96.3%. Those are the day counts from 1 September divided by 108, so 44 days to midterms is 40.7%, 66 days to the break is 61.1%, and 104 days to finals is 96.3%. On the bar, the midterm marker sits just before the halfway mark and the finals marker sits right up against the end.

Run the same term at 6pm the same day and the headline reads 26.6% instead of 25.9%. The percentage counts the time of day as well as the date, because it is built from timestamps rather than midnight-to-midnight days, while the days remaining figure stays at 80 until midnight. A tenth of a point is nothing to plan around, but it explains why the number never quite matches your own day count.

What this tool does not do

  • Nothing is saved between visits and no dates are remembered, so the bar only exists for one look.
  • Only midterms, finals and one break can be marked. Essays, presentations, reading weeks and registration deadlines have nowhere to go, which is why the bar stays clean while the real pressure points stay off it.
  • The break needs both dates even though only the start is used. Enter a break start with no end and the marker silently disappears, with no warning to tell you why.
  • Dates typed outside the term are not rejected. A finals date a week after the end date still appears in the list as a percentage above 100, even though its marker is pinned to the edge of the bar.
  • The dates come from your device. Cross a time zone or leave the laptop asleep for a week and the percentage follows the machine, not the registrar.

Other tools

  • 100 Day Challenge – the same countdown logic when the deadline is yours rather than the faculty’s
  • 30 Day Challenge – a month long run for the part of term that needs fixing now
  • Days Since Counter – count backwards from an event instead of forwards to one

Frequently asked questions

What dates do I need to enter?

Term start and term end, both of them, or the tool stops with an error. Everything else is optional: midterms and finals add a marker each, and a break adds one when you fill in both the start and the end of it.

Why is my percentage different from my own count?

Because it is worked from timestamps, not whole days, so the time of day moves it slightly, and because the term length is rounded up to a whole day count. On the example above, 28 days gone out of 108 is 25.9% in the morning and 26.6% by the evening.

Can I add my own milestone?

Not directly. The three it understands are midterms, finals and a break, so anything else has to borrow one of those slots or live in your own calendar. A project due date is not something the bar will show you.

What happens when the term is over?

The percentage stops at 100 and days remaining stops at 0, because both ends are clamped. Before the term starts you get 0% with the full length still showing as the term length, so a future term reads as completely untouched rather than negative.

Does it remember my term?

No. Nothing is stored and Reset clears all six date fields. Write the number down if you want to compare next week against this week.
