Timetables lie. You know the 9am lecture and the shift that runs to 21:00, but ask what the week actually leaves free and the answer is a shrug, because nobody adds up seven days of gaps in their head.
This does. Add each commitment with its day, a start time and an end time, press Find Free Time, and it walks every day from 6am to 11pm and prints the gaps one by one, with the length of each block and a weekly total underneath.
One honest detail: 6am to 11pm is a fixed 17-hour window. Sleep, the 2am essay burst and anything after 11pm do not count, so the number you get back is your daytime free time, not your whole life.
Add your weekly commitments to find all your free time blocks and total free hours.
How to use it
Fill in the name, pick the day, set the times, press Add Activity. It drops into a list under the form with a Remove button beside it, so a class you entered twice is one click to fix. The name is only there for you — the maths reads the day and the two times and nothing else.
Three messages cover most of what can go wrong. “Please fill in all fields.” when a box is left blank. “End time must be after start time.” when a window is entered backwards. “Add at least one activity to find free time.” when you press the button with an empty list. Reset clears the list and the result box at the same time.
The output shape is worth knowing before you press it. A day with nothing booked reads “All day free (17 hours)”. A day with bookings reads as blocks, for example 06:00–09:00 (3h) 10:00–18:00 (8h) 21:00–23:00 (2h), and the last line is “Total free time: 115 hours per week”.
A worked week
Monday has a Math Class from 09:00 to 10:00 and a part-time shift from 18:00 to 21:00. Tuesday through Sunday have nothing at all. Monday breaks into three gaps: 06:00 to 09:00 is 3 hours, 10:00 to 18:00 is 8 hours, 21:00 to 23:00 is 2 hours, which is 13 hours for the day.
The other six days stay untouched at 17 hours each, and 6 x 17 = 102. Add Monday’s 13 and the week comes out at 115 hours. It checks from the other direction too: seven days of window is 119 hours, you booked 4, and 119 minus 4 is 115.
Overlaps merge instead of doubling up. Add a lab from 10:00 to 12:00 and a group meeting from 11:00 to 11:30 on the same day, and the meeting gets swallowed by the lab: the day reads 06:00–10:00 (4h) and 12:00–23:00 (11h), 15 hours in total, which is 17 minus the two hours of lab. Busy time is counted once no matter how many things sit on top of each other, so a stacked week does not get punished twice.
Where the number stops being honest
A gap is a gap, whatever happens to be sitting in it. The tool has no idea that a 20-minute hole between a lecture in one building and a lab in another is useless to you while a free 20 minutes in the library is not. Same limitation as the timetable conflict checker: clock times are the whole picture.
It is also blind before 6am and after 11pm. A shift from 02:00 to 05:00 never shows up as busy time, and it does not eat into the morning either. The day simply starts counting at 06:00 as if nothing happened, which is fine until you wonder where that early shift went.
Three more limits worth saying out loud. It is recurring commitments only, so a one-off exam or a single dentist appointment has to be re-entered every week you care about. Nothing is saved, so closing the tab empties the list. And the total is not disposable time: eight free hours between an evening shift and a 7am class are technically eight hours and practically two, so read the blocks rather than only the bottom line.
Other tools
- hours between times — the length of a single gap, when one block is all you need
- hours to earnings — what those free hours are worth if you spend them on a shift instead
- hours to minutes — for gaps small enough that minutes are the honest unit
Frequently asked questions
Why does the day start at 6am and end at 11pm?
That is the window it counts: 06:00 to 23:00, which is 17 hours a day and 119 a week. Anything outside it is neither free nor busy in this tool, so treat the total as daytime free time rather than a full 24-hour picture.
Can I add a shift that runs past midnight?
Not as one entry. End time has to be after start time on the same day, so a 22:00 to 02:00 shift needs splitting into two activities on two days, or left out and read by hand. Overnight work is the one case where this tool is the wrong instrument.
Does it count hours when I am asleep?
Before 6am and after 11pm are outside the window and never appear. Sleeping until 10am on Sunday does not shrink the Sunday total either, because the tool cannot see your bed, only the calendar you gave it.
Will it remember my week if I close the tab?
No. Nothing is stored on this site, so a refresh starts you over with an empty list. Copy the result somewhere, or keep the tab open while you are still making decisions.
Why is my free time higher than I expected?
Usually it is a whole empty day doing the lifting. Saturday and Sunday with nothing booked are 34 hours on their own. Add the commitments you genuinely have before you decide the number is wrong, then look at the per-day blocks to see where it came from.
