Phone Free Timer

The idea is simple: start a session, put the phone in another room, and come back when the clock reaches zero. This page gives you the clock. It counts down 25 minutes, stops when you pause it, and writes a line in a log each time you let one run through, so you can see how many phone-free hours you put in rather than how many you meant to.

It takes four seconds to use. Press Calculate and the timer appears with three buttons, press Start, and that is the setup. Nothing is saved, nothing is sent, and you can leave the tab open on a second screen while you work.

The honest detail: it does not nag you. No sound goes off at zero, no notification pops up. If the tab is in the background the browser slows the countdown down anyway, so a timer you forget about is a timer that undercounts your session. Treat it as a clock on the wall rather than an alarm.

Start a phone-free study session. Set your timer, put your phone away, and track your focused study time.

How it works

Calculate draws the panel: a heading, a display reading 00:25:00, three buttons and the session log underneath. Start begins the countdown, one second at a time, and the display ticks down in hours, minutes and seconds so you always get the same six digits. Pause freezes it exactly where it stands, and Start again picks up from there rather than restarting.

Reset means different things depending on where you press it. Inside the panel it puts the clock straight back to 00:25:00, which is what you want after a false start. The Reset at the top of the card is a different thing: it stops the clock and empties the session log, so it wipes the record as well as the timer.

Let it reach 00:00:00 and it stops itself. That is the only moment anything gets written: the log takes a row with the session length, a completed mark and the time you finished. Pause halfway and walk away, and no row appears, because the log records sessions you finished rather than sessions you began.

Where the time adds up

One session is 25 minutes, which is 1,500 seconds of display counting down. Ten minutes in you are looking at 00:15:00, and a minute and a second later it reads 00:13:59, since the clock never rounds. Four finished sessions in a week is 100 minutes, an hour and forty, and the log shows four rows each marked 25 min and Yes.

Twenty-four sessions gets you to ten hours of phone-free work, a reasonable target for one exam fortnight, and it is a number the log confirms rather than one you have to remember. The research on interruptions keeps finding the same awkward result: people finish the task faster afterwards and report more stress and frustration doing it, which is not the same as saying the interruption was free.

For context on the interval, most advice on focused work settles somewhere around 25 minutes of attention followed by a short break, which is where the default here comes from. It is a starting point, not a rule, and if your coursework runs longer you will simply get one clean row per quarter hour rather than a story about your evening.

What it does not do

It does not keep your history. The session log lives in the page, so a reload or a closed tab empties it and you are back to No sessions yet. That is the trade for a tool that never asks for an account or sends anything off the device, and anyone who wants a running total needs to jot the count down before refreshing.

It does not block the phone. Nothing here can stop you picking it up, and the log will happily record a session you spent half of scrolling, because it only measures the clock. The putting-away part is still on you, and the practical version of that is the phone in another room rather than face down on the desk.

It also does not sync, does not vibrate and has no settings screen. The length is fixed at 25 minutes for every session, so variety comes from how many you run rather than from fiddling with the numbers. If you want a countdown for an audience, that is what the presentation timer is for.

Frequently asked questions

How long is one session?

25 minutes, shown as 00:25:00 when the panel opens. The clock runs from that figure to zero, and the Reset inside the panel returns it to the same length when you need to start over.

Does anything happen when it reaches zero?

The countdown stops and the session is added to the log. That is all, no sound and no notification, so if you are wearing headphones, glance at the tab now and then.

What does the session log actually record?

Only sessions allowed to finish: the length, a Yes in the completed column and the time you ended. A paused session you walk away from leaves nothing behind, and the whole log disappears when the page reloads.

Can I pause and carry on later?

Yes. Pause holds the remaining time where it is and Start continues from that point rather than resetting. Only the Reset inside the panel sends it back to the full 25 minutes.

Is my time stored or sent anywhere?

No. Everything stays in the page you have open, which is why it clears on reload, and the tool makes no network calls while it counts. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.
