So your transcript says 3.4 and you want to know what that is in plain letter terms. Understandable — a number is honest but it doesn’t read the way “oh nice, a B+.” does. This tool takes your GPA, looks up the scale your school uses, and returns the letter grade your GPA sits closest to.
Pick your country and scale, type your GPA, and you get your letter. Same GPA, different letters depending on how the scale is set up — and that’s the part worth paying attention to.
Turn a GPA back into a letter grade. Pick the scale your GPA is on, type the GPA, and see which letter grade it reads as closest to.
How the round-up works
A GPA is a credit-weighted average. Your courses each carry a letter grade with points, and your GPA is the weighted mix. To read it back as a letter, this tool finds the grade whose points are closest to your GPA on the selected scale:
GPA → closest letter grade (by points)
On the US 4.0 scale, a 3.4 is 0.1 away from a B+ (3.3) and 0.3 away from an A− (3.7), so it reads as a B+. A 3.6 flips to A−. The boundaries are genuinely fuzzy — there’s no grade called “3.4” — so the tool lands on the nearest one.
Worked example
Say your cumulative GPA is 2.8 on the US 4.0 scale and you want a label for it.
- B+ is 3.3 points — 0.5 away
- B is 3.0 points — 0.2 away
- B− is 2.7 points — 0.1 away
Your GPA sits 0.1 from a B−, closer than any other grade, so 2.8 reads as roughly a B−. On the India 10-point scale the same sort of GPA, say 6.8, sits near a B (6.0) — different number, different letters, same idea.
Why the letter depends on the scale
Every country draws its point values differently. Canada tops at 4.3 so an A+ is worth more than a plain A; India adds an O above A+; Australia uses HD and D instead of letter grades. That means a GPA that reads as a B in one system might look like an A− in another. If you’re comparing with a friend abroad or an application across borders, always convert on the receiving school’s scale — your own school’s labels aren’t universal.
Letter grades as a rough compass
Here’s the honest caveat: your GPA is an average, so it won’t match any single course’s letter exactly unless every grade in it was the same letter. Reading a 3.4 as “about a B+” is useful shorthand, but the real number your transcript shows is the GPA — and if you want to change it, look ahead rather than backwards. Frequently asked questions
What letter grade is a 3.5 GPA?
On the US 4.0 scale it sits exactly between A− (3.7) and B+ (3.3), and the tool rounds to the closer one when it leans — effectively reading as an A−/B+ boundary. Your school’s chart is the final word.
Is a 2.9 GPA a B−?
Close to it. 2.9 on the 4.0 scale is 0.2 from B− (2.7), 0.1 from B (3.0) — so it reads as a B, slightly below a solid one. Boundaries are the crux; treat it as “about a B− to B.”
Does this work for 10-point scales?
Yes — pick India in the tool. An 8.6 on the 10-point scale sits nearest an A+ (9.0), and a 6.4 near a B (6.0). The grade list and point values swap to match the scale.
Why does Australia show HD and D instead of letters?
Because its common 7-point scale uses HD (high distinction), D, C, P, and F. The tool changes its grade set when you switch to Australia so the mapping stays honest to that system.
Is this accurate enough to put on an application?
It’s a solid estimate for understanding your own GPA. For an official application, use your institution’s published conversion — the registrar’s table overrides any tool.
