What Is GPA? GPA Meaning Explained

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a single number that summarizes how well you did across all your courses, weighted by how many credits each course was worth. Instead of looking at five different percentages, schools use GPA to boil your performance down to one number that is easy to compare, track, and report.

How GPA works

Every grade you earn gets converted to points on a scale. The most common scale in the United States is the 4.0 scale:

  • A = 4.0 points
  • B = 3.0 points
  • C = 2.0 points
  • D = 1.0 points
  • F = 0.0 points

If your school uses plus and minus grades, those shift by 0.3 points in either direction. An A- is 3.7, a B+ is 3.3, and so on.

Once every course has a point value, each course’s points are multiplied by its credit value. Add up all those weighted points, divide by the total credits, and you get your GPA.

Why GPA matters

Colleges, universities, employers, and scholarship committees all use GPA as a quick filter. It is not the only thing they look at, but it is often the first number they see. A strong GPA opens doors to honors programs, graduate school, competitive internships, and scholarships. A weak GPA can close them.

Different scales in different countries

GPA is not universal. The United States typically uses a 4.0 scale. Canada often uses 4.3. India uses a 10-point scale. Australia uses a 7-point scale. The United Kingdom uses degree classifications instead of GPA. If you are applying across borders, you will need to convert your GPA or use a credential evaluation service.

How to calculate your own GPA

Enter your courses, grades, and credits into the GPA calculator and it does the math for you. You can also calculate it by hand using the formula: total grade points divided by total credits.

What is a good GPA

A 3.0 is generally considered solid. A 3.5 is strong. A 3.7 to 4.0 is excellent and competitive for selective programs. But “good” depends on your goals. A 3.2 in a demanding engineering program may be more impressive than a 3.8 in an easier one.

Frequently asked questions

What does GPA mean?

GPA means Grade Point Average. It is a weighted average of your grades converted to points on a scale.

What is a 4.0 GPA?

A 4.0 GPA means you earned an A in every course you took, weighted by credits. It is the highest possible GPA on the standard unweighted scale.

Is GPA the same as percentage?

No. A percentage is your raw score out of 100. A GPA is a weighted average of your grades converted to points. You cannot directly convert an overall percentage to a GPA because different courses have different credits.

Can my GPA be above 4.0?

On a weighted scale, yes. Advanced courses like AP, IB, and Honors can earn up to 5.0 points for an A. On a standard unweighted 4.0 scale, no.
