How GPA is calculated

Your GPA (grade point average) is a weighted average of your grades. Each letter grade is converted to grade points, then weighted by the number of course credits:

GPA = total grade points earned ÷ total credits

For example, a 3-credit A course is worth 3 × 4.0 = 12 points, while a 3-credit B course is worth 3 × 3.0 = 9 points. The more credits a course carries, the more it moves your GPA.

Which grading scales are supported

Grading systems differ between countries and even between universities within the same country. The calculator currently supports the most common scales, and you can switch between them with the country selector at the top of the calculator:

  • United States — standard 4.0 scale
  • United States — weighted 5.0 scale for Honors, AP, and IB courses
  • Canada — 4.3 scale (used by many universities and colleges)
  • India — 10-point scale
  • Australia — 7-point scale
  • Nigeria — 5-point scale

These scales represent common arrangements used by many institutions, not a universal standard. Always verify your final GPA with your own school.

Worked example

Say you completed these three courses on the standard 4.0 scale:

  • Biology — A, 3 credits (3 × 4.0 = 12 points)
  • Chemistry — B+, 3 credits (3 × 3.3 = 9.9 points)
  • Math — A-, 4 credits (4 × 3.7 = 14.8 points)

Total points = 12 + 9.9 + 14.8 = 36.7. Total credits = 10. Your GPA = 36.7 ÷ 10 = 3.67.
